Questions

Questions adults ask first

Is it too late for me to start?

No. Adults begin lessons at every age here, from their thirties to well past retirement. Your teacher starts with where you are now and moves at your pace.

How long is a lesson?

Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Many adults begin with 30 minutes and move up when they have a week's practice behind them. How long a lesson is says nothing about how fast you learn.

Do I need my own instrument?

Not for your first lessons. We have instruments in the lesson rooms. Ask your teacher before you buy or rent one, and ask about renting.

How are teachers matched?

At your placement visit, a teacher listens to what you play or hope to play, and you talk about your week. We offer a teacher and a weekly time, and you may ask to meet a second teacher before you register.

What is a placement visit?

A short visit to the studio: a talk, a first sound on an instrument, and a plan for a teacher and a time. You do not prepare, and nothing is graded.

Do I have to play for other people?

No. The informal evenings and the spring showcase are optional. Many students only listen for the first year.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

A lesson you miss with notice can be made up in the same term, when your teacher has a time. The tuition page explains it in full.

Can I bring a friend or a partner?

A friend or partner may sit in on a lesson if you ask your teacher first, or you can book a shared lesson. A parent who wants to learn beside their teenager can book one for both.

How does tuition work?

It follows the length and format of your lesson, and we give you our figures at your placement visit. The tuition page explains each part.

How do I stop lessons?

Tell us in writing a month before your last lesson, by email or at the front desk. We will explain what happens to a term in progress.
